Ideas collection no. 31. Environmental Ideas in Business

The deteriorating ecology is, perhaps, the most important problem from the list of "pressing problems of our time."

The recent nuclear disaster in Japan only confirms the validity of this thesis.

Environmental ideas in governments and nongovernmental organizations go down and generate environmental ideas in business - large, medium and small.

It is clear that, at times, in the wake of the “fashion trend”, various nonsense and pseudo-ingenious solutions are invented. But this process is natural. Only a huge, almost unrestrained “amount” of invented ecological ideas can eventually develop into that “quality” necessary for everyone, which we all are so impatiently awaiting.

The development of environmental ideas in business is impeded very much - the absence of civilized legislation in some countries, introduced by force. For example, separate waste collection, which has become the norm, perhaps already in all countries of the world, except the CIS, is perceived in the CIS as “eccentricity” and a project of the “twenty-second century”, from the “science fiction” series. But how many small businesses would have the opportunity to “feed” if the government had introduced a norm of separate waste collection and banned once and for all these odious fetid “bins” on which the “Clean City” logo flaunts in the best traditions of Russian absurdity ...

But let's look at examples of environmental ideas that today's Western business offers us in conjunction with scientists and inventors. Ideas will sometimes be sensible, sometimes projectile, but the main thing for us is to read the necessary array of information to make the brain work. After all, the environment does not indulge us with either a living business, much less living ecological ideas that this business would develop ... But anyway, soon we will all have to live with those norms of life and civilization, according to which the second generation naturally grows up. Europeans.

Modern ecological thinking comes to understand the benefits of household use of disposable tableware, so as not to waste time or money for the use of water and electricity, or natural resources (water) for washing it.

However, the harmful production and subsequent disposal of paper plates (not to mention plastic ones!) In itself is not at all an environmentally friendly idea.

This controversy was resolved by VerTerra, a New York green business. They released disposable plates and cups from ... fallen leaves.

The dishes are made from leaves and a small amount of water using a special technology using a press, steam and heat. Moreover, the technical process excludes chemicals altogether, as well as dyes, plastic, wax, etc. An important feature of this cookware is the ability to use it in a microwave oven, oven and refrigerator. This miracle costs $ 1 per plate, sold in packs of 10 or 12 pieces. Well, yes, it's expensive. But this is just the beginning.

The next interesting environmental idea for reviewing business ideas is magnetic soap for cleaning oil pollution.

This magnetic soap can be used to remove oil contaminants from the surface of seawater.

According to scientists, their invention can make a real revolution in ecology, while fighting eco-disasters. Indeed, often the detergents used to deal with oil spills on the surface of the water can do even more harm than the pollution itself that they are fighting.

A team of scientists from the University of Bristol led by Julian Esto ( Julian Eastoe) introduced iron atoms into the soap molecules, which are grouped into iron nanoparticles and "magnetize" the soap. This allows you to easily and simply remove both the detergent itself and the substances dissolved in it using a magnetic field.

The invention of any system that becomes active only in response to external stimuli, while not having any effect on its composition, is a big breakthrough. This will allow you to create products that only work when needed. In addition, the ability to remove soap composition after it has been added enhances the applicability of such products to a wide range of environmental pollution problems.

A stunning environmental idea - photocatalytic clothing.

The creative tandem of Helen Storey, professor at the London College of Fashion and chemist Tony Ryan, professor at the University of Sheffield, gave an amazing result.

The first brainchild using a unique clothing technology was a floor-length dress, which is now actively advertised by model Erin O-Connor. The dress is two-layered, under the chiffon there are photocatalysts in the fabric lining.

When light hits the photocatalyst, the electrons in the material rearrange and become more reactive. These electrons then react with water molecules in the air, breaking down into radicals - extremely reactive molecules. These radicals react with pollutants and break them down into harmless chemicals. To clean the fabric itself, the clothes just need to be sent to the laundry.

Another ecological idea for the production of clothes from milk.

The principle of technology for the production of clothes from milk consists in converting sour milk into a durable material by producing a protein powder from milk, which is then mixed with water, boiled and pressed into bundles. This yarn is used to make a fabric that closely resembles silk. Interestingly, clothes made from milk do not differ from traditional clothes, they can be ironed, washed and they do not have a specific smell.

Production of fabric from milk requires ten times less water than traditional production of fabric from cotton: to make a kilogram of material using the Qmilch technology, 30 liters of milk and 2 liters of water are needed (for comparison, to get 1 kilogram of cotton, 20 thousand liters of water must be spent). The author of the idea is the German designer Anke Domaske.

The next ecological idea of our review is the idea of converting human heat into heating heat.

The project belongs to the Swedish company Jernhusen. The company operates all national railways and oversees all buildings owned by Swedish railways. The idea of converting people's heat into heating heat was born in the process of observing the movements of arriving and departing people. Every day, about 200 thousand people drift back and forth at Stockholm Central Station. And the body of each person emits heat, which the Jernhusen company decided to use to heat the station and nearby buildings. How?

The station's ventilation system is equipped with heat exchangers that convert the generated heat into hot water. This hot water is pumped into the heating pipes, reducing energy costs by up to 25 percent.

In Holland, a country of cyclists and pedestrians, this road surface was born called Solaroad (by combining the two English words "solar" and "road", which together mean "solar road").

In general, the project belongs to the independent research center TNO. TNO sees its goal as conducting research in order to develop projects that are important for the economy and for the quality of life of society as a whole. One of these projects is the Solaroad project, which is planned to be launched across the country in 2012.

How does this road surface work?

The pavement consists of concrete blocks, usual for the road, covered with a 1 cm layer of crystalline silicone cells, which accumulate solar energy. The top layer of the coating is protective, and is made of thick durable glass. According to estimates, about 50 kW per year will be "collected" from approximately every square meter of such a road. This energy will be used to service roadside facilities, regardless of whether they are lights, road signs or even residential complexes.

Well, we got to a sore point ...

Ecological idea - popularization of separate waste collection

Ukrainian advertising agency PROVID has developed a creative campaign for Tetra Pak, which promotes the idea of separate waste collection. The main idea of this advertising campaign, which Tetra Pak wants to convey to end users, is that “without proper disposal, garbage remains ... garbage”.

This slogan encourages buyers of products in Tetra Pak bags to consciously approach waste disposal and pre-sort waste.

Advertising prints, which can only be called creative, clearly demonstrate to consumers that all magazines, toilet paper, paper towels are made from garbage and that separate collection of garbage will greatly facilitate its disposal.

Ecological idea - garbage accessories

Today, the trend of recycling or re-processing goods is very popular with modern businessmen.

Elvis & Kresse, a UK startup, is another example of an environmental business that makes garbage accessories. The company recycles old fire hoses, coffee bags, canvas, passenger belts, upholstery of office furniture, as well as shoe boxes, old newspapers, etc. into quite stylish ones - wallets, bags, belts, and other fashion accessories.

According to representatives of the Elvis & Kresse company, there is more than enough garbage in the country to produce anything. They have already processed 45 tons of waste and this is far from the limit.

And, finally, a useful ecological idea - how to make money on energy savings

A new resource from New York - MyEex has made its contribution to the protection of the environment.

Site users create a personal profile, where they enter their data on the use of electricity and heat for 12 months. MyEex, in turn, calculates the annual volume of these costs.

The next step is the user's agreement to reduce their energy costs. How to do this will help the community tips, articles on the site and other sources. Next, users contribute their new energy usage data each month, and MyEex awards them CERs (Certified Emissions Reductions) equivalent credits, which sell for between $ 10 and $ 25.

The participant receives his money through the Pay Pal payment system. In the near future the company plans to include cars, travel, and even goods in the list.

The resource itself is not charitable. MyEex partner is the international company OceanConnect ltd, which is a broker of energy resources. MyEex makes money by brokering loans.

As you can see, environmental ideas in business can cover a wide variety of areas. The main thing is that there is a favorable political situation ... After all, if the government does not think about the environment, then business will not risk doing business that is unprofitable for itself.
